Hard water is quietly shortening the life of your water heater
Scale builds up on heating elements and inside heat exchangers, forcing appliances to work harder until they fail. A tankless heater in Fairfax Water territory can lose efficiency within a year or two without softening. The softener costs less than the heater it protects.

What causes it
When hard water is heated, calcium carbonate drops out of solution and coats the hottest surface it can find: heating elements, tank bottoms and the narrow passages in a tankless heat exchanger. Each layer insulates the surface and forces the appliance to run longer.

Tankless water heater manufacturers commonly require descaling every year in water over about 7 grains, and many DMV utilities are above that. Fairfax Water and Loudoun Water homes with tankless heaters are the most frequent callers we hear from about error codes.

The opposite. Most tankless manufacturers recommend softening in hard water and some require it to keep the warranty valid.
My heater is already scaled. Is it too late?
Usually not. Flush or descale it once, then install the softener. If the heater is already failing, replace it and put the softener in the same day so the new one stays clean.
