Fairfax Water produces most of the region's drinking water and reports 5 to 10 grains per gallon of hardness. Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun and Prince William all share the same Potomac and Occoquan sources and the same chloramine disinfection.
DC Water publishes a hardness range of 70 to 120 ppm (roughly 4 to 7 grains) and uses chloramine year-round. Its Lead Free DC program is still replacing lead service lines in older neighborhoods.
WSSC Water serves most of Montgomery and Prince George's counties from its Potomac and Patuxent plants and uses free chlorine rather than chloramine. Rockville, Frederick and Bowie run their own systems.
